Why I Hate the Word "Fiblet"
If you search the word "fiblet" on Google, a bunch of results will pop up about "white lies" and "therapeutic lying" in dementia.
In this video, I explain the difference between those approaches and my trademarked term, Embracing Their Reality™, and discuss why it matters.
If you want to learn more about Embracing Their Reality, check out the eKit I made on the topic: rachaelwonderlin.com/product/embrace-their-reality-the-guide-to-better-dementia-care/

"What's the point if they forget?"
Переглядів 8914 днів тому
It's not often, but occasionally, people will ask us some version of this: "What's the point of doing activities with someone living with dementia if they're just going to forget about them tomorrow?" It can be frustrating and difficult for caregivers to hear things like, "You never visit me," from their loved ones living with dementia, regardless of how often they visit. However, it's still im...

    Thank you for this!! It took my husband years to understand this concept while processing the fact that his mother has dementia. I would go along with her reality, and he would constantly tell me I was lying to her and that wasn’t helping. To me, it was helping bc she is never argumentative with me. It was the path of least resistance. Plus, when I think of lying, I correlate that with malice and deceitful intent. Going with their reality is quite the opposite. You’re helping make them comfortable. It’s a win-win for everyone!

    Good advice, my dad had dementia in the last 4 years of his life. He had delusions and didn’t believe he was ever married or had children. When we told him he had children he became quite upset and believed his mother would be disappointed that he had children outside of marriage. His mum had been dead for 30 years at that point. He believed my mum was his carer hired by his mum rather than his wife, and that I was a family friend. We realized it was much better to ‘entertain’ his delusions and hallucinations, which calmed him. Pointing out the truth only leads to stress and anxiety for those with dementia. Once we embraced his ‘reality’ he was very happy up until his passing.

      Try giving him a cup of chamomile tea around 7 pm. Put a little vanilla milk in it and a spoon of stevia. Brew it 2 minutes in the microwave with just water and the tea bag first. If that isn’t enough. Try 2 bags the next night. No caffeine drinks after 1 pm. Read the side effects of his meds.

    My brother continually tells people that I'm stealing from him. Their response is that I don't have any access to his money (which is true). He's never said this to me directly. However, it's hurtful because he never says this about anyone else -- friends, other family members. Why am I being singled out? Does this represent a deep-seeded hatred of me on his part? Any thoughts would be helpful and appreciated.

    • @DementiaByDay
      @DementiaByDay 6 місяців тому

      Hi Helene! This is a common challenge and it has nothing to do with resentment on his part. He's trying to understand the world around him, so his brain has created a story that involves you stealing from him. He's lost control of many things in his life, and this is how it's coming out. My response would be, "I'm so sorry you feel that I'd steal from you. I would never do that to you. Let me look into where your money might be going." We know it's not going anywhere but it feels helpful to him!

    My approach was, Mom, these people will help you while I have to travel. My kids live on opposite coasts, and there was a previous respite stay. A new question is that one of the other residents is in the active dying stage. I know that, I'm not sure my mom is clued in, and she thought that other person was someone she knew. I don't know the protocol, I'm sure they will send all the residents to their room while they remove the body. Any thoughts?

    You make a really great point here, Rachael. We get this sometimes when families are expecting one to one care because we are a smaller home with only eight residents. Families don’t understand why one of our staff can’t take mom for a 30-minute walk everyday or read to her for half an hour at bedtime. This is really the job of private duty aides, which are great if you can afford them, but they are prohibitively expensive for most. I think part of it lies in the marketing where every day looks like nothing but rainbows and ice cream. I think that’s true about 65% of the time, but the other 35% is not always pretty in dementia care even if the slick marketing brochures tell families otherwise. Aggressive behavior, refusals of care, falls, elopement seeking, changes in medical condition, arguments between residents…this is all a reality that families need to be prepared for. Communication is key between facilities and families, and it’s crucial that families be contacted quickly whenever issues arise. When families are realistic and work together with the facility and health care providers, we can all give the loved one much better care and a better quality of life.
